When it comes to the cost of living, it’s not surprising that the most expensive neighborhoods in Los Angeles are not in the most wealthy parts of the city.
According to the 2016 Cost of Living Index report, the top five most expensive zip codes in L.A. are 90044, 90049, 90260, 90262, and 90270. Three of these (90049, 90260, and 90270) are located in West Hollywood; 90044 is in Brentwood, and 90260 is in Pacific Palisades.
Compared to other major metropolitan areas, Los Angeles’ cost of living is relatively high. The index found that a two-person household needs an income of $102,400 to maintain a standard of living in Los Angeles—significantly more than the $75,600 needed to live comfortably in New York City and the $62,700 required for a standard of living in San Francisco.
Additionally, while rental prices have dropped nationwide over the past few years due to increased demand and limited supply, they remain elevated in Los Angeles relative to other cities. According to Zumper data from January 2017, an average two-bedroom rental costs $2,868 per month – more than double the national average of $1,409.
Despite being one of the most expensive cities on earth to live in, there are a variety of ways that residents can save money without compromising their quality of life. For example, compared to other big cities, food prices in Los Angeles are pretty low.
Grocery prices in the area are only about one-third of what they are in New York City and San Francisco. Additionally, because Los Angeles is a car culture city, residents can save money by using public transportation or carpooling.
