Mahindra has put the 5-door Thar off-roader through a lot of testing, and the vehicle was recently seen in a video. The video shows the top of the 5-door Thar, and while the test mule has been heavily camouflaged, there seems to be a kink in the roofline.
The new Mahindra Thar with three doors has a relatively flat roof, while the five-door version has a roof like the old Scorpio. If it goes into production, the longer back part of the roofline is likely a design choice to give people in the back more headroom. This design will make the 5-door Thar look different from the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
On the inside, the 5-door Thar will offer two rows of seating: captain’s seats in the front row and bench seats capable of fitting three people in the second row. The extra set of doors will make it a lot easier to get in and out of the 5-door Thar, and that should be a major selling point.
Many buyers have been turned away from the 3-door Thar as it is not practical as a family car.

The luggage space is also expected to be ample in the 5-door model. What the big one won’t get, though, is a soft, convertible top. All trim levels will come equipped with a hard top.
It would be fascinating to see if Mahindra chooses a fiber roof with one or two detachable panels for the 5-door Thar or a complete metal top. There doesn’t seem to be a sunroof available.

The 5-door Thar will get the same gasoline and diesel engines that are on offer with the 3-door model, but with increased power and torque outputs.
The buzz suggests that the engines will have the same tune as the Mahindra Scorpio. This means 172 bhp and 420 nm for the manual variant and 172 bhp and 450 nm for the automatic variant of the 2.2 diesel engine.
The 5-door Thar’s 2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine is expected to have a maximum power output of 197 bhp and a maximum torque output of 380 Nm on the automatic version and 197 bhp and 370 Nm on the manual version.
Options for the 6-speed manual and automated gearboxes will be available. Most likely, all trims will come equipped with a four-wheel drive system that has low and high settings.
Mahindra will not be at the 2023 Indian Auto Expo. Instead, it will hold a number of events throughout the year to show off its new cars. One such event is expected to launch the 5-door Thar in mid-2023.
Model for model, the bigger model costs about Rs. 2 lakh more than the 3-door model. The Thar with five doors will still have a body-on-ladder chassis and an independent suspension with more travel and movement for off-road use. It will be sold as a lifestyle vehicle that will be approved by the family!
