Remarks Monoj who is pursuing his MBA from the GT Group of Institutes, Bengaluru, “When I bagged the sixth position at the World’s Arm Wrestling Championship in Bulgaria, I was on cloud nine. I started arm wrestling when I was all of 19 in the year 2013. I started participating in arm wrestling contests held in my college in Dibrugarh. I got selected as the champion of champion best arm wrestler of the college and from thereon, I participated in several arm wrestling contests. I was in Bulgaria for 10 days – from October 1 to 10 this year. The people of Bulgaria are very friendly and they helped me a lot.” To maintain his competitive edge, Monoj follows a strict workout routine that includes five to six hours of practice. He also follows a strict diet regimen and does not pig out on junk food, oily stuff and avoids high-carb and high-fat diet.He further informs, “Arm wrestling is held in different categories –
55 kg, 60 kg, 70 kg and 75 kg. I have to keep a strict check on my weight. For the last three to four years, I am 55 kg and to maintain this weight, I am very particular about what I eat. We also need to exercise a lot which includes rope climbing, running, pulley, table practice, exercise of finger power, etc. Regular visit to the gym is a must-must on my daily routine list. The sportsman attributes his success to his trainer Arup Rajkonwar who is also a national gold medalist and an international arm wrestler who helped him in knowing the ABC of arm wrestling and his institute in Bengaluru “supported” him a lot. “I am planning to participate in the 39th Arm Wrestling Championship which will be held in 2017 in Hungary with 55 kg weight category. I am also aiming to win gold in the Asian Arm Wrestling Championship which will be held in Kyrgyzstan from June 2017,” he adds.
Monoj sums up by saying, “I would like to request the Assam Government to extend financial help to enable me to participate in the said events. If we are honest in our approach and have a positive attitude, we can achieve even the impossible in life.”
